It was at University while studying and doing social work that I kept hearing the phrase ‘post second world war’. It referred to the changes that occurred largely as a result of war. Well it wasn’t the fighting but the communal ‘togetherness’ brought about by being under attack. ‘Homes for heros’ were built as the slums were cleared. The National Health Service was born so that all our people had acess to medical care ‘free at the point of use’.

Will we speak of ‘post Covid 19’ ? What we knew before this crisis and how we live after. Whatever happens we have to make it good and here we are all trying to make the best of the situation we are in.

As a child we would sing “ Zoom, zoom , zoom we are going to the moon” well now we are zooming everywhere including the moon if there is a meeting.

It has breathed new life into our union, Napo. I should say, at least our branch. For the past number of years we have struggled to get members physically at Napo branch meetings partly because of distances to travel and for most a pressing target eclipsing their good intention to go. Now from wherever you are log in and you are there.

Zoom meetings do remind of Celebrity Squares as in the photo above. We seem to have made a leap not just with zoom but also with teleconferencing. I have been a reluctant user preferring physical meetings but Covid 19 catapulted me like you into another way of being.

I do hope out of this crisis we will have learned or relearned our need of each other not just in the hard times but the good times. And if it gives a new lease of life to Trade Unionism that will be us working a difficult situation to the good.

Best day,

g
