When will daylight begin?

Why do I keep looking at the graph to tell me what time daylight will begin? I must be aware that the darkness is lingering. I rose at 5 30 this morning but after showering and dressing I fell asleep in the chair as I drunk my coffee. It is as if I need to see daylight in the same way a runner needs to hear the starting pistol before they move.
I know the sun will rise but before it does it keeps me guessing. I find myself becoming more grateful when it does.
