What would you get out of bed for?

An unusual red flower — I think so , what do you think?

This morning the cold had taken hold and my thoughts were being influenced by it, “Just stay in bed” “Why make the effort?”.

Then I remembered that I had a discussion group tonight and felt if I couldn’t make the effort in the morning it would not be right to go. Somehow a discussion group motivated me to get out of bed and embrace the day.

The news on the radio didn’t help informing me that another vehicle had driven into people in Barcelona and 13 were killed. How difficult it is for journalists having daily to write about shocking events and broadcast it to the rest of us.

I survived the morning and then took an easy afternoon.

I did go to the discussion group. It is a Quaker-based group where we look at a section of writings and then discuss what we think. This month’s theme we were looking at how we share the Quaker message with the rest of the world.

I know you are wondering why am I riveted by such a group I am wondering too, but I am.

We meet in a family home, much more cosy than a hall, and I quite simply like sitting around with others discussing and asking questions. The oldest is 93 and I am probably the youngest. I like being in mixed gatherings and hearing the wisdom of those who have lived a lot longer than I.

It is an opportunity to listen and express our thoughts as the Sunday meeting is based on silence.

After an hour or two of discussion, the kettle is on and we all have a brew and a biscuit.

I know nothing fancy but enough to get me out of bed on a morning when I am struggling.
