In recent years I have tried to be creative in my interpretation of ‘The Twelfth’. If I were to describe my early life as a play, I would begin with the scenery.

Scene 1 would be of a hospital ward. It would depict the Royal Victoria Hospital, Belfast where I was born.

Scene 2 would be of houses in a fairly new housing estate with fields nearby and a river dividing the fields

If it were July, many houses would have an Ulster or Union flag attached to an upstairs window sill.

Scene 3 would be a school classroom

Scene 4 would be inside a community centre

Scene 5 would be inside a church

Scene 7 would be inside the home of a grandparent

Scene 8 would be of a town centre

If it were July there would be marching bands dressed in Red, White and Blue

Scene 9 would be inside a church hall with a Boys’ Brigade insignia

Scene 10 would be inside a nightclub

Scene 11 would be of a street protest
