The mind is a good servant but a bad master

I am thinking about the conditioned mind. How it has learned to fear. I crept into the shower tentatively this morning as I did yesterday morning. The handyman had been during the week and resealed the gaps where the water may have been leaking through. My conditioned mind was doing the ‘What if?’ What if we haven’t solved it and the neighbour starts banging the door?

There we have it, do we live in the fear and be limited or do we acknowledge the fear but ‘tentatively creep into the shower’?

You might tell that I have spent a few days at the Krishnamurti (K) Centre in Hampshire. K speaks a lot about the conditioned mind. There are some things which conditioning may serve a purpose like when the alarm rings it gets me up. It is seeing when the mind serves a purpose and when it goes from the position of servant to master. I was told, “Fire is a good servant but not a good master”, no one said it about the mind. But my sense is it applies also to the mind.

It needs to know its place and perhaps for too long, I have allowed it to do what it likes without restraint.

It reminds me of organisations that are set up with a purpose but not before long find themselves spending a lot of time on internal dramas. Often so much so that the original purpose gets lost.

It would be a tragedy if our minds took the life that inhabits us.

The book of Romans puts it like this,

Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is — his good, pleasing and perfect will.

Romans 12:2 New International Version
