So having done the previous five steps we are ready for surgery, God’s surgery. I have been thinking about the word God and reckon if it does not work for you it could be omitted along with alcoholic.

Were entirely ready to have all these defects of character removed.

I do think we have to remain open to the other. Perhaps we can remove ‘these defects’ ourselves though I have never seen a surgeon operate on herself.

There is something in these steps that is pointing us towards our need for others. Of course, the steps mention God though even with God removed there is still a need for another. I only remove the word God as it may be a stumbling block to some. The power is much bigger than to be offended and is only interested in recovery. Recovery of what? Recovery of our true selves. If we were to be recovered to a former state that would be backward. The power wants to use what has pulled us to the bottom to raise us to the top.

We will not be as in a former state we will be in a better state. Alcohol, lust, chocolate, whatever are the magnet that draws from us those defects of characters. The defects of character are the scars of life they show up where we have been damaged or perhaps never filled and are in need of healing.

This step seems to speak of us having surrendered ourselves and allowing ourselves to be made whole.
