St Albans Pilgrimage

Hertfordshire city remembers its Saint

Puppet-sized St Alban / gj photos

If you happened to be in St Albans on a Saturday morning nearest 22nd June you may be surprised to hear a Public Address (PA) informing you a pilgrimage is about to begin. A typical English High Street within minutes becomes the route for giant puppets. In between the puppets you will see more clergy than is on duty at the Vatican on a Saturday.

As they process through the town to the Cathedral the story is relayed through the PA how Alban disguised himself as the priest the Romans sought and for it, he was killed (this is the very short version).

I thought I would let the photos tell the tale.

Boys dressed as Roman centurions
Not sure what the lions symbolise?
Is it that the executioner’s eye popped out?
The great and the good, front Chair of the County Council, behind local Member of Parliament, behind City Mayor
Is that a Bishop’s mitre?
Henry VIII and one of his wives
Children dressed as monks carry the relics of Albans

A few videos if you like.
