Pay your debts!

Often I have read and heard that it is our thoughts that determine our behaviour. I have always questioned that knowing that my emotions are often the first to react.

It was so on Friday early evening. I had waited for 3 weeks patiently for money owed to me. The person owing requested a favour so I saw it as my opportunity to get the money. They then attempted to begin renegotiating. Well, my emotions went 0 to 60 in a second. I have learned that it is best in such situations to say that I am ending the call and end it.

For the next 14 hours, my head couldn't move it. I was trying to work out why not paying the money created such a huge reaction. Of course, money is only a symbol it is really about my perception that someone is attempting to take advantage and my expectation that you pay your debts. The idea that someone would attempt to evade infuriates me.

Thankfully the next day as I was about to tell “If the……” they interrupted by saying they had paid. I felt the emotional mountain that has been built collapse.

I was left thinking did it take me to express how I felt to get them to do what should have been straightforward?
