By an interesting turn of events ‘Mum’ burial coincided today with my 50th. I will always remember my 50th and I will always remember it as the day we laid mum to rest.

Tee and I travelled down to East London just after 11 and finally found the plot in the sprawling Manor Park cemetery. Due to COVID 19, the ceremony was at the graveside. It felt somewhat like the burials I have watched on American films or rather the outdoor weddings I have watched. A gazebo had been erected to protect us from the sun and seats were placed inside.

I was moved when my eye caught the Jamaican flag draped over her coffin. She wasn’t nationalistic she just loved Jamacia.

It was altogether different as we sang with music coming from a speaker.

One of her granddaughters put together an excellent order of service combined with photos and tributes. I was privileged to have mine included.

At a time when we all contemplating the words, ‘Black Lives Matter’ I thank God that in this path of mine we broke through any illusion of race. You mattered and I know I mattered to you.

Best day,

g
