Is connecting to a zoom meeting giving me the same experience as travelling by plane?

It was 37 degrees Celsius here on Friday. We have been experiencing warm weather for the last week. I remember when I first moved to the Southeast of England I noticed that the summers were more akin to what I knew previously when holidaying in France.

I don’t know whether it is the result of the warm weather, my 50th birthday (last week), taking 2 weeks holidays and having booked for the Summer school in Jerusalem that I am feeling I am somewhere else. It is as if I am abroad.

This morning as I awoke I could I have been awaking in the dormitory at Abraham Hostel in Jerusalem. The early morning stillness sounds and feels the same. As I get up I see clearly in my mind the room and my movements each morning. I can see the bodies still sleeping in the bunk beds yet here I am in my room at home.

I look out the window and I can see the balconies of the residential flats that backed onto my dorm room. That huge air conditioning unit is still in view.

I wonder again whether zoom has deceived my brain. Zoom is bringing me places that before only travel or a plane could do. In those seconds between me pushing that button and landing in the zoom meeting, it seems I am still travelling and my brain registers me being in a different place.

Best day,
