“I don’t have the time to bless myself”

Northern Ireland is a place full of sayings. One of which is above. You may not understand it so let me explain. Catholics bless themselves by making the sign of the cross, going, I think, from touching their head to their heart, to their left shoulder and then to the right shoulder. As they do it they say inwardly or audibly, “ In the name of the Father and of the Son and the Holy Spirit”

When I grew in Ireland Catholics would ‘cross themselves’, as I remember, when they passed a church and when an ambulance passed. It was pretty evident. So the phrase conveys the extent of one’s busyness as in other words, “I am so busy I don’t have time to do something that takes less than 3 secs.”

It felt like that as I was waterboarded by the computer for most of the day.

best day,
