Beautiful Boy
I watched Beautiful Boy yesterday evening. The title is lifted from the words of the father of the ‘Beautiful Boy.
The film is based on David Sheff’s bestselling memoir “Beautiful Boy: A Father’s Journey Through His Son’s Addiction”.
Steve Carell who plays David Sheff (the father) who I like seemed to me to be somehow stifled in the role. Timothée Chalamet plays Nic Sheff the son (did I notice huge eyebrows on two occasions or was it late?).
After I watched it I sat for a time, it had that effect. I was grateful.
The plot played through what I know (from hearing people's accounts) of a teenager getting hooked on drugs and their family dealing with it, the lies, the thieving, the hopes, the hopes dashed, the promises, the breaking of promises, the giving up, the anger and finally the wait and see what happens.
The film did what a film should do, bring you on a journey where by the end you just sit on your sofa and be grateful.
