All Quiet on the Western Front
When someone told me they watched it on Neflix and it was dubbed I said, “I am so glad I watched it in the cinema.”
The cinema gave me the German with English subtitles. If it hadn’t been in German I would have forgotten it was a story of World War 1 from a German perspective. Perhaps it is that makes the point, these could be any soldiers, the tragedy of war is the same.
What I like about film is it usually tells a story from the personal. World War 1 is too big for me but give me a personal story and I will see it through the life of another. The film centres on Paul who at 17 years old enlist with three friends in the German army. Another film whose greatest is its ability to hold our interest in the lives of others as they connect with ours.
