Last week I wrote about the most amazing thing that happened at a societal level; for me, it was the peace that came to Northern Ireland in 1998. A week later, we have all seen the scenes of violence that came out of Northern Ireland.

The violence is reported as being fuelled by anti-immigrant sentiment.

Meanwhile, Israel attacks Iran. We live in a world where violence seems an acceptable response.

Violence probably exists within us all, and we all do well to manage it. I have not always managed my feelings of violence well. What helped me most was several spiritual awakenings. The most recent one left me with an awareness of our oneness as humanity and as creation. While acknowledging our interconnectedness does not eliminate all difficulties, it counteracts ideas that aim to divide us.

Ultimately, for me, the solution to the conflict in Northern Ireland was spiritual. In the time since then, I am of the view that a spiritual awakening is what is required within participants of most conflicts, wherever in the world.
