I went to Conscious Cafe on Monday night. The theme was ‘Our Shadow’. I almost always saw the shadow as our darker side but a quick read before suggested it can also be our light.
What did I learn? A narcissist believes their view is correct and everything that falls short of that is wrong. Have you noticed how many videos are now on Youtube about narcissism? Maybe it is just my feed?
I have a notion when something becomes so popular that probably most of us have it. I admit I can often have an idea of what is right and while I struggle at times to see the legitimacy of the other way I usually get the perspective.
I was also reminded that the culture in which we are raised ( I am thinking of national) allows expressions that in another culture would be frowned upon. I am reminded of when I refused to get off a bus in England that decided to change its route and insisted it continue. Now I would say living in a ‘protesting’ Northern Ireland I learned that if you were annoyed you had to right to protest. What I had failed to notice was I was not in Northern Ireland.
At one point it occurred to me to try and be my full self and not keep anything in my shadow. Strangely I couldn't be much different. I did share some of the things my former wife shared in the divorce papers as one of the clues to seeing our shadow is to ask others what it is. There is nothing like a divorce petition to see your shadow.
We mused on the two things I could remember and of course, we said like most things there can be a positive as well as negative, it is how we manage it.
